rayonnement de la puissance d\u2019un \u00c9tat, l\u2019aviation civile occidentale est un secteur \u00e9conomique qui a subi de grandes transformations dans les derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies. Sa n\u00e9olib\u00e9ralisation eut pour effet de d\u00e9mocratiser le transport par avion, notamment par la multiplication du nombre de transporteurs et de leur mod\u00e8le d\u2019affaires, mais eut \u00e9galement divers impacts sur le personnel navigant de part et d\u2019autre de l\u2019oc\u00e9an Atlantique. Cette transformation juridique et \u00e9conomique du secteur eut pour cons\u00e9quence une pr\u00e9carisation des conditions de travail et d\u2019emploi pour une partie croissante des membres d\u2019\u00e9quipage, intrins\u00e8quement li\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019hypermobilit\u00e9 des capitaux et de ces travailleuses et travailleurs, de la sous-traitance ou du recours \u00e0 des formes atypiques de relations de travail (travail autonome, agences de placement de personnel, etc.).\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>Au sein de ce projet, il sera question de comparer les structures institutionnelles, politiques et juridiques qui encadrent les aspects li\u00e9s au travail au sein de l\u2019aviation civile canadienne et europ\u00e9enne, dans l\u2019optique d\u2019offrir une meilleure compr\u00e9hension des r\u00e9alit\u00e9s \u00e9mergentes en mati\u00e8re de relations de travail et d\u2019emploi pour ces membres d\u2019\u00e9quipage. La question de recherche propos\u00e9e\u202fest la suivante\u202f: comment la n\u00e9olib\u00e9ralisation de l\u2019aviation civile a-t-elle modifi\u00e9 les relations de travail pour le personnel navigant canadien et europ\u00e9en et quelles sont les cons\u00e9quences de ces r\u00e9alit\u00e9s sur les conditions de travail et d\u2019emploi pour ces travailleuses et travailleurs de ce secteur \u00e9conomique\u2009?\u00a0\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>Il est important de mentionner que ce projet s\u2019int\u00e9ressera \u00e9galement aux transformations en mati\u00e8re de solidarit\u00e9 au travail intrins\u00e8quement li\u00e9 \u00e0 ces r\u00e9alit\u00e9s, puisque la syndicalisation et autres manifestations de celle-ci deviennent de plus en plus difficiles, en raison de l\u2019atomisation du travail du personnel navigant \u0153uvrant pour un nombre grandissant de transporteurs ayant recours \u00e0 des formes d\u2019emploi atypiques. En somme, ce projet de th\u00e8se vise \u00e0 offrir une meilleure compr\u00e9hension des impacts des changements politiques, juridiques et institutionnels des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies sur les travailleuses et travailleurs \u0153uvrant \u00e0 titre de personnel navigant.\u00a0\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>Bacheli\u00e8re en science politique, Laurence Leduc-H\u00e9bert a termin\u00e9 une ma\u00eetrise en droit \u00e0 l\u2019UQ\u00c0M en 2018. Son m\u00e9moire portait sur les impacts de la n\u00e9olib\u00e9ralisation de l\u2019aviation civile europ\u00e9enne sur les conditions de travail du personnel navigant. Cette recherche lui permit de constater que les politiques \u00e9conomiques occidentales des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies se sold\u00e8rent principalement en une grande pr\u00e9carisation des emplois chez un nombre grandissant de ces travailleuses et travailleurs (personnel navigant technique et commercial). Souhaitant approfondir sa r\u00e9flexion par rapport \u00e0 ce sujet, elle choisit les relations industrielles pour son doctorat en raison de leur caract\u00e8re interdisciplinaire et de la richesse du champ disciplinaire. Enfin, d\u2019un point de vue professionnel, elle a travaill\u00e9 pendant plus de 10 ans au sein d\u2019une grande entreprise de transport a\u00e9rien, ce qui lui permit d\u2019acqu\u00e9rir une exp\u00e9rience de terrain inestimable, en plus d\u2019une compr\u00e9hension accrue des nouvelles r\u00e9alit\u00e9s en mati\u00e8re d\u2019aviation civile. The study will attempt to answer how it may affect different workers\u2019 quality of work in varied ways, especially workers at two segments of the data value chain of AI\u2019s development, the highly prized model workers like data scientists and the hidden data workers like content moderators. This is done by reconceptualizing AI and its building blocks of digital data as parts of a much more comprehensive global architecture of<em>\u00a0planetary computation<\/em>.\u00a0<br><br>This study unfolds the governance layers of planetary computation through its\u00a0<em>historical, geospatial, processual, relational, and temporal lenses\u00a0<\/em>to bring us closer to knowing how it concentrates power at different scales and on the bodies and minds of workers.\u00a0Within this new techno-geoeconomic context, a select few core geographies, organizations, and workers who benefit from human-centered forms of AI have cornered a disproportionate share of its gains.\u00a0However, at first, planetary computation may appear as a power of absolute domination, but it is not hegemonic as workers do resist and contest it and attempt various experimentations to rebalance this unjust status quo.\u00a0<br><br>This study is highly relevant in the context of our expanding data economy and could point us to possible new trends ahead.\u00a0Questions regarding the quality of work have yet to be addressed to give accounts of the tangible outcomes these different workers&#8217; experiences may yield going forward. As part of this,\u00a0we are confronted with many paradoxes, such as our public investments in a few elite model workers over the numerous data workers, who are usually located in the Majority World, like in India. Thus, these trends can further drive and explain changing patterns of job polarization, coloniality, and new margins of inequalities as we aspire toward more responsible and human-centered AI development and use.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br><br>Focusing on two experimentations (Reframing conversations and the reorganization of power), this project is opening new lines of interdisciplinary thinking when it comes to the development potential of conceptual, policies, and practices dedicated to our collective regulation of digital technology toward a more sustainable and inclusive digital future for all workers. While platform firms enthusiastically promote the flexibility and efficiency offered by the gig economy, some worry that these new business and managerial practices diminish worker power and lead to deteriorating working conditions.<br><br>It can be argued that worker power is strongly correlated with better work in terms of improved job quality and worker voice. In contrast, the decline of worker power is correlated with worse work in the gig economy and the growing precarity of the digital workforce. However, little research has actually been done to analyze how differences in worker power influence gig workers\u2019 working conditions, and how worker power is impacted more generally by the gig economy. This paper therefore pursues these two lines of inquiry.<br><br>Power is a relational concept, shaped by contextual factors and requiring a comprehensive framework to fully understand it. Drawing on B\u00e9langer &amp; Edwards\u2019 (2007), we propose a theoretical model for understanding the power interaction between platforms and gig workers and its impact on working conditions.<br><br>This model sets out three theoretical propositions: first, various structuring factors (technology, product market, and institutional regulation) shape power interactions at work; second, power interactions must integrate capital\u2019s control (via the mechanisms of the market, organizational structure, and labour process) and worker resistance (power strategies, institutional and organizational experimentation) to shape worker power; finally, difference in worker power can lead to better or worse work.<br><br>The overarching argument is that gig workers\u2019 power matters for their working conditions. We then highlight that although worker power seems to be diminished under the platform\u2019s various control mechanisms, the new context facilitates workers and their representative agents to develop new power strategies and build strategic capabilities to enhance worker power, which would lead to a better world of work for workers.<br><br>While the main thrust of this analysis is to set out this framework, we draw on the growing literature and practical examples to illustrate these lines of inquiry as regards the relationship between platform work, worker power and better or worse work.<br>\u00a0<br>Ya Gao holds a bachelor\u2019s degree in management and a master\u2019s degree in economics. After completing her bachelor\u2019s, she pursued her interest in labour studies at Renmin University of China, majoring in labour relations. Her master\u2019s thesis focused on understanding the realization of the labour process in the ride-hailing industry within the gig economy.<br><br>The experience of studying work relations in the gig economy kindled Ya Gao\u2019s interest in exploring new work relations, their forming mechanisms, and the definition of good work in the digital age. Driven by this interest, she enrolled in the School of Industrial Relations at the University of Montreal to further investigate these themes. Ce sujet est encore peu explor\u00e9 au Canada, en particulier au regard des femmes cadres. Ces derni\u00e8res subissent des sources de stress sp\u00e9cifiques, et la pression cumulative qui en r\u00e9sulte peut nuire \u00e0 leur sant\u00e9 physique, mentale et reproductive. Dans l\u2019industrie h\u00f4teli\u00e8re, les femmes qui acc\u00e8dent aux postes de cadres font face \u00e0 une double peine\u00a0: elles occupent des emplois atypiques et n\u2019ont pas la possibilit\u00e9 de se syndiquer. La nature de leur profession exige qu\u2019elles travaillent de longues heures, souvent avec des horaires extensibles, tandis qu\u2019elles assument g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement une part disproportionn\u00e9e des t\u00e2ches domestiques. L\u2019organisation du travail dans l\u2019h\u00f4tellerie favorise traditionnellement les hommes, qui b\u00e9n\u00e9ficient d\u2019une plus grande flexibilit\u00e9, leur permettant un engagement quasi total au travail. Cet imp\u00e9ratif de disponibilit\u00e9 nuit \u00e0 la progression de carri\u00e8re des femmes et accro\u00eet leur charge mentale et physique. De plus, et bien que des lois visant l\u2019\u00e9quit\u00e9 salariale aient \u00e9t\u00e9 mises en place, les femmes en gestion gagnent, encore aujourd\u2019hui, moins que leurs homologues masculins. Dans une telle organisation du travail, il y a lieu de s\u2019interroger sur l\u2019\u00e9tat actuel de sant\u00e9 globale des femmes cadres dans le secteur de l\u2019h\u00f4tellerie.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br>Cette recherche qualitative repose sur la r\u00e9alisation d\u2019entretiens semi-dirig\u00e9s aupr\u00e8s de 12 \u00e0 15\u00a0femmes cadres dans des h\u00f4tels du Qu\u00e9bec, issues de divers d\u00e9partements (r\u00e9ception, marketing, RH, etc.). S\u2019appuyant sur la th\u00e9orie f\u00e9ministe mat\u00e9rialiste, cette \u00e9tude explorera l\u2019impact du travail domestique sur les exigences professionnelles et son effet sur la sant\u00e9 globale (physique, mentale et reproductive) des femmes. Nous appuyons l\u2019id\u00e9e que la pand\u00e9mie a exacerb\u00e9 les probl\u00e8mes organisationnels dans l\u2019industrie h\u00f4teli\u00e8re, ce qui pourrait avoir men\u00e9 \u00e0 la d\u00e9t\u00e9rioration de la sant\u00e9 des femmes cadres.<br><br>Audrey Blanchette a obtenu un baccalaur\u00e9at en traduction \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Laval en 2019, puis un dipl\u00f4me d\u2019\u00e9tudes sup\u00e9rieures sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9es en administration des affaires \u00e0 HEC Montr\u00e9al en 2020. Pendant ses \u00e9tudes universitaires, elle a d\u00e9couvert l\u2019industrie h\u00f4teli\u00e8re, ce qui l\u2019a amen\u00e9e \u00e0 d\u00e9laisser la traduction pour aspirer \u00e0 faire carri\u00e8re dans ce domaine. Au moment o\u00f9 elle terminait ses \u00e9tudes \u00e0 HEC, la pand\u00e9mie avait grandement affect\u00e9 son industrie de choix. Les h\u00f4tels, tr\u00e8s peu occup\u00e9s, voire ferm\u00e9s, ne recrutaient pas. Cela ne l\u2019a pas arr\u00eat\u00e9e\u00a0: elle a trouv\u00e9 un emploi de superviseure dans un grand h\u00f4tel \u00e0 Whistler en Colombie-Britannique, o\u00f9 elle a v\u00e9cu pendant deux ans. Forte de sept ann\u00e9es d\u2019exp\u00e9rience dans l\u2019industrie h\u00f4teli\u00e8re, dont la gestion de sa propre entreprise, elle a choisi de reprendre ses \u00e9tudes \u00e0 la ma\u00eetrise en relations industrielles \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Laval \u00e0 l\u2019automne\u00a02023. C\u2019est en constatant l\u2019omnipr\u00e9sence des injustices sur le march\u00e9 du travail qu\u2019elle a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de se sp\u00e9cialiser dans cette discipline en optant pour le profil m\u00e9moire. Depuis son retour aux \u00e9tudes, elle allie un parcours acad\u00e9mique \u00e0 un emploi \u00e0 temps partiel comme auxiliaire de recherche sur des sujets vari\u00e9s comme le droit du travail, la sant\u00e9 et la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 au travail, ainsi que les effets des nouvelles technologies sur les travailleurs et travailleuses.
