On June 27, 2025, the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms will be celebrated. To mark this significant event in Quebec\u2019s history, the\u00a0Faculty of Law<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Department of Industrial Relations at Universit\u00e9 Laval<\/strong>, in collaboration with the\u00a0Interuniversity Research Centre on Globalization and Work<\/strong>\u00a0(CRIMT) and\u00a0Wilson & Lafleur<\/strong>, organized a one-day conference. This event was held at the Charles-De Koninck Pavilion of Universit\u00e9 Laval and brought together, among the speakers, around fifteen researchers and doctoral students from CRIMT.<\/p>\n\n\n

Labor and the Transition to Electric Vehicles<\/em>\u00a0: A Global Perspective<\/em><\/p>\n\n

The transition from manufacturing internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) to electric vehicles (EVs) has become a key priority for governments worldwide in their efforts to cut human-made greenhouse gas emissions and decarbonize transportation. However, the implications of this shift for the global automotive workforce remain uncertain. The extent to which it results in job losses, deteriorating working conditions, or evolving skill requirements will largely depend on factors such as labor market policies, institutional frameworks, government support, and union influence.

Organized by Cornell University\u2019s ILR School in collaboration with the Interuniversity Research Centre on Globalization and Work (CRIMT), the\u00a0Labor and the Transition to Electric Vehicles<\/em> : A Global Perspective<\/em>\u00a0conference seeks to foster a global perspective on the EV transition and its impact on workers. Bringing together research on both traditional automakers and suppliers as well as emerging industry players\u2014EV manufacturers and firms in the electric battery value chain\u2014the event explored developments across key regions, from major automotive hubs to critical sites of production and raw material extraction.

Further to the conference, selected authors were invited to refine their papers for inclusion in an edited volume to be published by Cornell University Press in late 2025. This book will be among the first contributions to the literature examining the EV transition\u2019s effects on workers.<\/p>\n\n\n

The CRIMT Partnership Project on\u00a0Institutional Experimentation for Better Work<\/em> organized a major international conference entitled:\u00a0Work on the Brink: Better Work for a Just and Sustainable Future<\/em>. This conference examined the disruptions and crises affecting the world of work, addressed their consequences, and critically assessed the strategies, policies and actions implemented by world-of-work actors to support, mitigate, or counter these effects.

This conference took place at\u00a0HEC Montr\u00e9al<\/strong>\u00a0(Montr\u00e9al, Canada) from\u00a0Thursday<\/strong>\u00a0October 24th to Saturday October 26th, 2024<\/strong>. It aimed to engage researchers from the academic community and professionals from the world of work, and included a hybrid component to facilitate remote participation.

Better Work for a Better Society. Actor Resilience and the Power of Experimentation<\/p>\n\n

Over the past few decades, significant changes have been disrupting the world of work: digital technologies, the breakdown of corporate boundaries, the reshaping of global supply chains, climate change, global pandemic outbreaks, shifts in identities and values, political unrest, resurgence of geopolitical tensions, and changes in public policy, to name only a few.
\u00a0
Such changes are having widespread and profound effects, which in a lot of cases seem out of synch with the aspirations for\u00a0better work<\/em>, by which we mean productive, innovative, healthy and inclusive work, in which individuals live free from excessive insecurity, unaccountable control over their working lives, conflicts between personal and professional life, and can express their voice individually and collectively. These effects are not conducive to achieving\u00a0better, more just, peaceful, sustainable, open and democratic societies<\/em>.
\u00a0
However, these disruptions also open the way to various forms of experimentation, reflecting the resilience and mobilization of actors in the world of work. The challenge is to describe, analyze and compare these experimentations \u2013 including those conducted in response to the major challenges of our time (for example, geopolitical tensions, Covid-19 or the climate crisis) \u2013 in order to better understand how certain actors or groups of actors are able to appropriate, mobilize and transform institutions of regulation in favour of an improvement (or deterioration) in the quality of work, or the societies in which these experimentations are carried out. We need to draw lessons from these experiences.

It is with that in mind that the CRIMT International Partnership Project on Institutional Experimentation for Better Work, which brings together the\u00a0Interuniversity Research Centre on Globalization and Work<\/em>(CRIMT) and an international network of associated partner centres and researchers, hosts a conference on\u00a0BETTER WORK\u00a0<\/strong>FOR A\u00a0BETTER SOCIETY: Actor Resilience\u00a0<\/strong>and the\u00a0Power\u00a0<\/strong>of\u00a0Experimentation<\/strong>.\u00a0

This conference took place at HEC Montr\u00e9al (Montreal, Canada) from\u00a0Thursday, October 27th<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0Saturday, October 29th\u00a02022<\/strong>. The conference was held in person and included a hybrid component to encourage some level of remote participation.

Better Work I & II: Understanding What Makes Work Better or Worse. CRIMT and its partnership project on institutional experimentation for better work CIRA workshops<\/p>\n\n

CRIMT, in collaboration with the Canadian Industrial Relations Association (CIRA), held two roundtables entitled Work: For Better or for Worse at the Association\u2019s 2021 Conference.

Bringing together ten members of the CRIMT Partnership Project, these roundtables provided an opportunity to discuss how to think about better and worse work. Each panel featured the ideas of four researchers who drew on their research findings to address the issue.

The panelists answered a series of questions from a common grid covering three constituent dimensions of work: risk, whether economic, health or social; control or autonomy, i.e. the ability to exercise control over one\u2019s work and its limits in relation to other aspects of one\u2019s life outside of work; and expressiveness, i.e. the dimensions that relate to voice, as well as to the possibility of achieving one\u2019s potential at work.

What Kind of Work for the Future? Perturbations, exp\u00e9rimentations et re-r\u00e9gulation<\/p>\n\n

This conference offered original contributions from academics and practitioners on two related themes: changes that disrupt the world of work and lead to the re-regulation of work and employment, and the forms of organisational and institutional experimentation that underpin or accompany these processes of change and re-regulation. Bringing together four panels of international specialists, more than 250 researchers from 21 countries in some 40 thematic workshops, followed by a one-day Community Forum, this conference brought together some of the world’s leading experts on work and employment.

CRIMT’s mini-conferences at SASE (2015-2017) helped refine CRIMT’s research programme on organisational and institutional experimentation for better (or worse) work<\/em>. The Lyon mini-conference included 11 workshops on the theme of experimentation.<\/p>\n\n\n
