It also provides a valuable opportunity for graduate students to explore and analyze these topics from an international perspective.<br><br>Focusing on the theme &#8220;Employment Policies Facing the Challenge of Age,&#8221; this third edition built upon discussions initiated during the second edition at Laval University in 2024. Age, more than just a number, significantly influences working conditions, career paths, occupational health, and the adaptation of work environments to meet individual needs. Trump\u2019s re-election and similar political events worldwide have sent shockwaves across the globe. This is an invitation to rethink globalization and the politics of production through a geopolitical lens, and to explore what this means for workers and their representatives.<br>\u00a0<br>The discussion was moderated by\u00a0<strong>Dalia Gesualdi-Fecteau<\/strong>, Director of CRIMT and Professor at the University of Montreal, and started with three with three initial, complementary, and interrelated presentations:<br>\u00a0<br><strong>Huw Thomas<\/strong>\u00a0(University College Dublin) and\u00a0<strong>Harry Pitts<\/strong>\u00a0(University of Exeter) set the stage with a conceptual framing that builds on both the special issue\u2019s call for papers and their\u00a0<em>Futures of Work<\/em>\u00a0publications from<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/futuresofwork.co.uk\/2021\/11\/03\/welcome-to-an-age-of-workplace-geopolitics\/\">2021<\/a><\/span> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/futuresofwork.co.uk\/2023\/09\/12\/farewell-futures-of-work-hello-workplace-geopolitics-from-industrial-relations-to-international-relations\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">2023<\/span><\/a>.<br>\u00a0<br><strong>Jeffrey Hilgert<\/strong>\u00a0(Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al) then offered an analysis of the geopolitical underpinnings of industrial relations theory. However, the implications of this shift for the global automotive workforce remain uncertain. The extent to which it results in job losses, deteriorating working conditions, or evolving skill requirements will largely depend on factors such as labor market policies, institutional frameworks, government support, and union influence.<br><br>Organized by Cornell University\u2019s ILR School in collaboration with the Interuniversity Research Centre on Globalization and Work (CRIMT), the <em>Labor and the Transition to Electric Vehicles<\/em> conference seeks to foster a global perspective on the EV transition and its impact on workers. Bringing together research on both traditional automakers and suppliers as well as emerging industry players\u2014EV manufacturers and firms in the electric battery value chain\u2014the event  explored developments across key regions, from major automotive hubs to critical sites of production and raw material extraction.<br><br>Further to the conference, selected authors will be invited to refine their papers for inclusion in an edited volume to be published by Cornell University Press in late 2025.
