Atteindre la carboneutralité ne se fera pas sans les travailleuses et travailleurs de la construction. Au cœur de la transition climatique, ce secteur sera déterminant — à la fois pour bâtir les infrastructures de demain et pour créer des emplois de qualité, syndiqués et durables.

Ce webinaire du CRIMT portera sur les principaux constats du rapport Jobs for Today: Construction Trades and Net-Zero, rédigé par Jim Stanford et Tyee Bridge, avec une contribution de John Calvert.

Les échanges porteront sur les perspectives de croissance de l’emploi dans les métiers spécialisés de la construction, alors que le Canada vise la carboneutralité d’ici 2050. Les panélistes discuteront de l’arrimage nécessaire entre politiques climatiques, stratégies industrielles et investissements en infrastructures afin de soutenir des emplois de qualité tout en accélérant la décarbonation.

Au-delà des prévisions d’emploi, le webinaire s’intéressera aux conditions d’une transition juste et réussie : investissements publics en formation de la main-d’œuvre, renforcement des normes du travail et création de parcours inclusifs vers les métiers de la construction. Une attention particulière sera accordée au rôle des syndicats et du mouvement syndical canadien dans la structuration des emplois climatiques de demain.

Réunissant des syndicalistes, des chercheuses et chercheurs, des organisations environnementales et des étudiant·e·s, ce webinaire offrira un espace de réflexion et de dialogue sur les politiques permettant de concilier action climatique, justice sociale et développement des compétences.

Jobs for Today: Construction Trades and Net-Zero

As Canada accelerates its transition toward net-zero emissions, the construction sector is poised to play a decisive role in both delivering climate solutions and creating good, unionized jobs. Meeting climate targets will require massive investments in clean energy infrastructure, energy-efficient buildings, and low-carbon transportation — all of which depend on a highly skilled construction workforce.

This CRIMT webinar will examine the findings of Jobs for Today: Construction Trades and Net-Zero, a recent report by Jim Stanford and Tyee Bridge, with input from John Calvert.

The discussion will explore the report’s projections of significant employment growth for skilled construction workers as Canada works toward its 2050 net-zero target. Speakers will reflect on how climate policy, industrial strategy, and infrastructure investment can be aligned to support high-quality jobs while accelerating decarbonization.

Beyond employment forecasts, the webinar will focus on the conditions required for a successful and just transition. This includes the need for sustained public investment in workforce training, strong labour standards, and inclusive pathways into construction trades. Particular attention will be given to the role of trade unions and Canada’s labour movement in shaping climate policy and securing the climate jobs of the future.

Bringing together trade unionists, researchers, environmental organizations, and students, this webinar offers a timely forum to discuss how climate action can be designed to advance economic justice, skills development, and good work.
